Dark Lotus – Black Rain (2004)

November 24, 2012

It always seems to surprise people that I love ICP and other Psychopathic acts. I had two ICP tattoos done when I was 17, but I’m no Juggalo wigger, at least not anymore! Ha. For the years leading up to and following the turn of 20, I got a bit ashamed of my body art, mainly due to the internet revealing so many Juggalos as being total and utter fucking morons, and ICP et al’s…

Methadone Abortion Clinic / Stoma – Split 7″ (2009)

November 23, 2012

And the award for best cover art ever goes to…Stoma! Ha ha. This band are becoming a long standing default in the goregrind world, and with good cause; their low-end, rumbling gurgle’n’scream sound projects them as a kind of scat and prolapse obsessed version of Regurgitate. In the vein of the sheer ridiculousness of this particular sub-genre, this can only be a good thing. Their side of this EP, entitled Rectal Cranium Inversion, is two mid-length tracks of Stoma-ery goodness. My…

Merciless Precision / Toecutter HC – Split 7″ (2012)

November 22, 2012

Toecutter HC kick things off with a super-fast punky grind assault, and after all the non-grind I’ve been reviewing recently I find it rather difficult to keep up! It’s all kept rather simple here, there is a no-nonsense approach which seems to be missing on a lot of records these days. Straight to the point and over before I’ve written no more than a few sentences, Toecutter HC are ones to watch in the volatile world of…

Or is it saxgrind? Who the fuck would have thought it? Not me, that’s for sure! Trust the Netherlands! Ha ha. An absolute classic record in every shape and form and propelled me full on into the world of grindcore and death metal. Could easily be a contender for one of my favourite albums of all time, but I think in my mid-teens I played this record to death. Unfortunately it was never pressed on vinyl (fecking sort it out Earache!), but the CD version will suffice. It’s simple, and digital as fuck (in both sound…

Waking The Cadaver – Beyond Cops, Beyond God (2010)

November 19, 2012

I absolutely loved the first Waking The Cadaver record but I could never truly get my chops around Beyond Cops, Beyond God. I feel that everything I love about the WTC sound is missing here; the razor-wire guitar work, the out of time gravity blasts and THAT piccolo snare drum! Here WTC take their Devourment-by-numbers slam death sound and bash it head on into the more traditional brutal death studio sound. The quality is a massive improvement, but…

The first thing you’ll likely notice about this EP is that the labels instruct you to rip this at 45rpm, when it clearly should be played at 33rpm. Typos aside, we have a seriously interesting mix here. Fascist Insect have a punky approach to grind, and throw a lot of different influences into the mix as well (there is even an acoustic guitar at one point). As with the other Mixomatosis 7″ I have, I have come to the conclusion that they seem desperate to squeeze as little as they can onto a record and call it an EP. Saying that, this is by far my favourite Mixomatosis minute or two; obscene goregrind obviously digitally remixed (shifted drums) melds awkwardly with (probably copyrighted) full orchestra music, before falling away and returning with more flanger-drenched horribleness. The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Voodoo Chile (1970)

June 26, 2012

I always remember my father talking about this record. This was always one of those stories that would come up after a few whiskies. Long and short of the story was that my Dad had swapped this Jimi Hendrix record for something a long time ago, and that the record must have been worth a fortune now. He mentioned it once after my initiation into the awesome world of vinyl and I decided to look…

Lazarus Blackstar – Lazarus Blackstar 7″ (2006)

This is one of my favourite 7″s! Paul Catten fronted Lazarus Blackstar is a rare beastie, but a feckin’ good ‘un. In my opinion their existence can be summed up in this cracking little EP (not that the records aren’t any good), which really acts as an an album sampler for Funeral Voyeur more than anything. Side A eclipses side B, “Make Believe Master” is enormously heavy and ridiculously catchy for something of this slow…

Sorry it’s been a while since I’ve done a post, I’ve been working on other things including behind the scenes work for this blog (writing a lot of posts in advance is a new tactic I’m going for). Today we have a post for Enemy Soil’s classic slice of drum machine grind; Casualties of Progress. The EP was put out on Relapse in April 1995 on a run of both black and grey marbled records. Gallows – In The Belly Of A Shark (2007)

June 23, 2012

I had a passing interest in Gallows when they hit “the big”; they were a gritty band combining the groove of traditional/doom metal with the energy, anger and song structure of hardcore and punk. Unfortunately, I’ve spun the one record with this song on it a few times (I can’t remember what it is called) and I don’t get it. I love “In the Belly of a Shark” as a single though, which is a…

Y’know what, I don’t know anyone who fucking likes Mortiis. Either he really isn’t appreciated at all, or I am just surrounded by people who do not understand his music. I’m pretty certain it is the latter. When I was in school a lot of the goth kids started liking Mortiis when The Grudge came out, and this pissed me off if anything, because I’d been chastised for listening to Mortiis for years, and now…

Embalming Theatre / Intumescence – Split 7″ (2005)

May 22, 2012

What I like about getting another Embalming Theatre split is that you can see what weird and wonderful art Mr. Gemmet has come up with time. This under-rated Swiss genius seems to squeeze out any pretentiousness from his surrealism before bashing it headways in full colour into the morbid, the sick, and the downright unusual. This rather colourful 7″ sleeve features a very angry looking guy with wires in his mouth. These wires are subsequently,…

Before there was Skindred there was Dub War. I was always attracted to this band because of their awesome name. A war of dub? Sounds like my kind of party. My love for them sadly does not extend any further than this cheeky little single pressed by Earache (when they…

It is often easy whilst analyzing Godflesh’s contribution and effect upon heavy music to focus wholly on the groundbreaking Streetcleaner record and to overlook this crooked, snarling little gem of industrial terror. More claustrophobic than Streetcleaner’s sprawling inhuman soundscape, Godflesh pummels the listener with a mechanized drum machine attack and plodding, menacing bass. What I have here is the original, untouched Swordfish Records pressing of this EP. Some think that the clear Swordfish pressing is…

This is an extremely collectable Swans “bootleg” of live performances recording during the supporting tour for the seminal album Children of God, pressed on double 12″.
