The Beatles – Beatles For Sale (1964)

November 22, 2024

Listening to the Beatles albums chronologically, I found that Beatles For Sale was the least enjoyable of the lot thus far. It took me a little while to put my finger on it; initially things seemed like they were in their right place; that early 60s rock and/or roll sound that I have come so familiar with now after being 4 albums deep was in full effect, and the production is more grounded, with less…

The Beatles – A Hard Day’s Night (1964)

There’s a lot of songs on this thing but it just flies by. I haven’t seen the movie and have no plans to so unsure how they tie in, if at all. I’m assuming this may be the reason why the songs seem a little shorter than usual? Either way, song quality is up there, as in there’s very few moments where I want to skip forward. Not as many stand outs as the previous…

Epäkristus – Satan, Sex and War (2024)

November 20, 2024

Collection of various demos and misc. tracks from Epäkristus, some are great quality, some are quite raw. It is not the “necro” kinda raw either, but like a rehearsal room kinda raw, like some sort of black metal Agathocles. As almost always with collections like this, the quality is hit and miss. It’s a demo compilation though, so it is to be expected.

Lividity – Perverseverance (2018)

It’s wild to me that a band as well loved and revered as Lividity has so little in material that is actually of any substance. Perverseverance is not bad, but I feel like I have heard this done a thousand times before – by Lividity and others too – and done much better too, at that. If you like straight up brutal death with clear, modern production, then check this out. Otherwise, I’d probably skip…

Lividity – …Til Only The Sick Remain (2002)

Great tunes but they really suffer due to the muted and rounded production. The drums are reduced to a series of clicks and clatters, the guitars are super scooped and overcompressed and the vocals just sound like burps and farts. Yes, I am fully aware that this is brutal death metal, and in another album perhaps all of the above are plus points rather than negatives, but the sound in which this record is presented…

Cannibal Corpse – The Wretched Spawn (2004)

I am constantly blown away by how consistent Corpsegrinder-era Cannibal is throughout the late 90s and early 2000s. Bands of this prolific nature tend to either run out of steam or wander off the beaten path into experiments that either haunt them or pay off in spades. Cannibal? Nah, just straight up fucking BRUTAL death metal, fam. And I’m not talking about the subgenre. I’m talking about the meat of this thing being hard as…

Sortsind – Sår (1999)

Dim, dark, dismal, raw, lo-fi, miserable black metal. Tidy! Not to be confused with the “other” Sort Sind which also plays black metal, this “Sortsind” merges drab, “necro” black metal with tense atmospheric passages and troubling vocal performances to invoke a harrowing and haunting experience. Many thanks to JohnsonBruckheimer on YouTube for the recommendation.

The Beatles – With The Beatles (1963)

Yo dawg I heard you liked your rhythm section panned hard left? Say no more, say no more! Shabazz Palaces – Quazarz: Born on a Gangster Star (2017)

Has its moments of genius and inspiration, but also flounders and loses its way in other less inspired moments. As a whole, the record is an ethereal and dreamy approach to hip hop, without entering the “stoned” or zoned-out realm too much. Production is nice, but nothing super special.

“Running All Over The Wicket” has the sickest bassline since “Beneath The Waves An Ocean”. Generally though, I struggle to pick stand-out songs here compared to the other FOTL full-lengths. Despite this, I find myself preferring the general tone and production (all of which is a little darker than usual). So, it’s a strange balance for me. Track 2 lets this one down considerably, otherwise this is fantastic, dusty, archaic “proto” dungeon synth. The underwhelmingly-titled “Outro” gets very spacy, where the first and final tracks are far more involving, like a cross between early Mortiis and a Sega Mega Drive video game.

Polymers Are Forever is a short EP from FOTL, released a few years after the previous record and shortly before the band recorded their third album. Some of the contributions are excellent, others are pointless (as the listener, I’m sure it was fun collaborating with these artists even during the COVID end times). A nice project idea but I’m not sure if it stuck the landing. A strange end to a strange discography. RIP Sepultura (as we know it)

Tyr – Valkyria (2013)

Overproduced, plastic metal with lame vocals and the cringiest subject matter. Hey, that might be for you, but it’s not for me.

Nala Sinephro – Space 1.8 (2021)

Great combination of jazz elements, ambient and electronic sounds. The combined result is one of immense relaxation and chill-out vibes, but there is a nagging edge to proceedings that keeps you on the edge of your seat; keeps you wondering what it is that’s coming next. I guess it’s very “Lynchian” in that respect, if I could be so bold. Great stuff.

Mountain Realm – Shadowlorn (2024)

Somewhat underwhelming but – in all fairness – well constructed and executed ambient dungeon synth. It felt rather promising at first, so I was a bit disappointed by the record’s end, but others may find much more value here than I did.

V/A – Underwater Computing – ΔQVΔRIVS (2020)

October 27, 2024

Very low key, ethereal ambient music with relaxed, chilled out beats and positive vibes. There are melancholic moments but for the most part this thing is very easy going and very uplifting. A great, longform listen to accompany your day. For what it’s worth I had zero fucking clue that this was a compilation album when I first heard it (I thought Underwater Computing was the artist!)

Sepultura – Quadra (2020)

October 26, 2024

I feel like Quadra goes hard, harder than most of the more recent Sepultura records, which have all been quite progressive. Quadra has its moments, but I find the recipe has been tweaked to include some of that old school brute force too, making for an interesting and potent mix.

Absurd – Out Of The Dungeon (1993)

I enjoy all eras of Absurd, but the original demos continue to elude my tastes. Honestly, these things are so badly recorded that it because almost impossible to enjoy them. Couple that with the band’s how shall we say, “budding” musical skills, and this is a painful listen.

Gendema – Sassy Things (2024)

Who is she? And more importantly, will she pass the blunt? Anyway, cover photo aside, Gendema’s Sassy Things is a very chill workout in all things drum and bass. Don’t expect this to go hard, but otherwise it’s a very nice listen for some afternoon work and coffee.

Steve Earle – I Feel Alright (1996)

October 25, 2024

Steve Earle’s “Feel Alright,” the opening track here, appears in Season 2 of HBO’s critically acclaimed The Wire. I think for that reason, it feels more like a closing track than an opening one, but here it is in its original format, steering us into the smokey world of Steve Earle a la 1996. Steve’s been through some shit. I know nothing about the guy and I’ve only heard this one album, but this guy…

Freya Beer – Beast (2021)

A fresh mix of fuzzy rock and angelic pop. Like Lorde joined one of these several hundred revival blues rock bands that are around right now. It’s an interesting mix, and reminds me of Fleetwood Mac in some regards, and also stuff like Blood Ceremony or Jex Thoth. There is something that really just tells me that Freya’s songs would be better with a piano or even an electronic beat behind them, though. But hey,…

Impaled Nazarene – Manifest (2007)

Manifest is far from a fan favourite but there is very little that this band has done wrong over the several decades that they have been spilling their sleazy, thrashy black metal out into the world. Therefore, Manifest should not be underestimated. In fact, I prefer it to the previous few albums; the production on this is just far more satisfying IMO, even if the songs are perhaps not as great. It’s a strange balance….

Witchfinder General – Friends Of Hell (1983)

Perhaps not as endearing – or as well known – as the debut but this sophomore effort would initially be the last album from the fun “trad doom” group Witchfinder General. There are some fantastic songs here, such as opening number “Love On Smack” or later cuts like “Shadowed Images”, and the production is just gorgeous; those riffs ooze out of the speakers in ways that would make the whole Rise Above roster water at…

Napalm Death – Noise For Music’s Sake (2003)

October 24, 2024

When I first got into Napalm, this was teh compilation that I bought. I was a bit disappointed that it was not all just raging grindcore, but that’s what I get for doing my research first, huh. Anyway, nowadays with everything being online and available instantly at the click of a button, this isn’t all that useful, but it was a nice intro to all the Earache years stuff from Napalm Death. It also had…

Machine Head – Burn My Eyes (1994)

October 23, 2024

I can’t remember where or how I got this but this one of the few albums I had on CD as a kid. I remember selecting it as one of the few CDs to take into my art GCSE exam, which was like a 3 hour sitting (or felt like it) that I spent working on some bullshit painting that nobody gave a fuck about. But yeah, anyway. My favourite thing about Burn My Eyes…

Cradle Of Filth – Malignant Perfection (2024)

Sounds promising in many respects. Harkens back to the sounds of old, such as Midian and the Cradle To Enslave EP, but also has that homogenous sound that has permeated the last several records.

Impaled Nazarene – All That You Fear (2003)

All That You Fear is not as good as the albums that proceeded it and started a lull for the next few releases. It’s one of my least favourite Impaled Nazarene records even though in truth I enjoy them all. This one also has the honour of having one of my favourite IN songs, “Armageddon Death Squad” as the second track. Production is nice and balanced too. Things sound great, I’d just prefer other records…

Impaled Nazarene – Absence Of War Does Not Mean Peace (2001)

A marked change in the Impaled Nazarene sound happens around this record. There were signs before, with Nihil, in a maturity in the songwriting process. This course continues further with Absence of War… but into a more thrash metal direction. The finished result is then an extra venomous blackened thrash attack, with plenty of blast beats, fast sections and machine gun double bass kicks. Production is a bit crisper, a bit clearer, and it works…

Impaled Nazarene – Taog Eht Fo Htao Eht (1991)

Choppy, messy, yet absolutely satisfying early demo from the wonderfully perverse Impaled Nazarene. Oath Of The Goat, which came the same year as their other demo, Shemhamforash, sees the band experimenting with music that is much closer to their hideous debut album than what we get on that other demo. The death metal is dialled back a bit, and we get the potent mix of grind/crust and black metal (almost like war metal) that Impaled…

Impaled Nazarene – Shemhamforash (1991)

Shemhamforash has more of a death metal influence than anything else from Impaled Nazarene that I’ve heard. As always the crusty punk elements are also highly visible, but the black / war styles are in very short supply on this interesting cassette demo. Almost to reinforce my point, there are Extreme Noise Terror and Deicide covers at the end. Production wise, thing are pretty raw (this is a cassette demo after all) but Shemhamforash is…

Impaled Nazarene – Nihil (2000)

Nihil displays a maturity to Impaled Nazarene’s sound that I must admit I did not see coming. The punk / black / war metal blend is still there, but some tracks have a morose melody to them; a more developed and dare I say grown up sound to them. The production isn’t as laser sharp as Rapture, but the balance is still great (the bass sounds fantastic) and the songs hit home as you would…

Impaled Nazarene – Rapture (1998)

Rapture, despite it’s unassuming artwork, feels like a return to form and focus. It’s not that previous LP Latex Cult was bad, but it definitely leant to the cheeky, silly, perverted d-beat punk stylings more than the previous records (of which there were only elements, rather than a full theme of). Rapture feels almost uncompromising in comparison, with a fuller production and a much more urgent style of songwriting. I’ll refrain from comparing it to…

Move over Jim Kirkwood! LOL for real though, this a very fun and slightly pompous (in musical terms of course) journey through a D&D campaign that never was… the Elder Scrolls II sequel that never came… the Knightmare feature film that never got made… you get the idea. Throw in some brilliant artwork and you’ve got the full package.

Eroticism – Opening Sex (2022)

Pornography goes hand in hand with terrifying synthesizers and power electronics and whilst the compositions here are thoroughly unsettling (great job!) the porno samples just seem to completely sit apart from everything else and randomly show up every now and then. Granted, there are some very choice uses of audio that have been selected, where no doubt all manner of grotesque pleasures are unfolding, but if anything it is distraction here. I’m not sure if…

Swans – Oxygen (2014)

Swans – Not Here / Not Now (2013)

A great live album, and one of the few that I personally own. There are some great takes here, and the sound is fairly clear, but the additional demos are lacking somewhat. In regards to the album itself, it stands in the shadow of We Rose… which came before it and was much more prominant with a full pressing release (not just limited), and it also stands in the shadow of the monumental The Gate…

Swans – Time Is Money (Bastard) (1986)

I am beyond shocked that after 13 years of writing about music mostly full time I have yet to touch on the epic that is Swans’ Time Is Money (Bastard) single. One of my favourite songs ever, if only for it’s intense and unforgiving drum attack. The title track is all drums, reverb, snarling vocals and not much else. Truly uncompromising and terrifying music. They don’t make ’em like this no more!

Ancestors Blood – Return of the Ancient Ones (2008)

Beautiful compositions of meandering riffs and excellent accompaniments in the forms of various keyboard sounds and other traditional instrumentation (whether virtual or otherwise). The easiest comparison I could make would be early Winterfylleth, but the vocals here are much more harrowing, and the guitars are little bit more “evil”, if I could be so trite as to use that as a descriptor. Production is fantastic; clear and vivid, with the drums in particular sounding absolutely…

Swans – Cop (1984)

In a word: punishing. I suppose you could say that Cop is more focussed than Filth, and I also suppose that this kind of “focus” on sheer brutality would continue into the Young God EP and the more precise mixed-electronic works of Greed, Holy Money and the singles associated with those albums. Cop however, is like a bunch of New York’s most experimental and uncompromising musicians accidentally stumbled upon sludge / doom metal. The cuts…
