Miles Davis – Kind Of Blue (1959)

December 26, 2024

Imagine my surprise at realising I hadn’t written about this one yet! It’s only one of the most well-known Davis records, it’s no big deal haha

Anyway, Kind Of Blue is a legendary record that needs little introduction or preamble from someone of such ill repute as myself. Released in ‘59 however, it is a far cry from the sometimes maddening experimental pieces that would come from Davis and the various incarnations of his band. Kind Of Blue is instead experimental in its own calm, quiet way. I would say, In A Silent Way, but that’d be a bit cringe, perhaps.

The production is gorgeous and the instrumentation is smooth and effortless. It can come across as “background music” if you’re not actively listening but there’s a lot going on here in this cool blanket of seemingly effortless brilliance.
