Satyricon – Now, Diabolical (2006)

October 9, 2024

I’m going for it – I’m gonna give Now, Diabolical a 4. This is probably because of nostalgia reasons, I can clearly see that. Objectively, it is easy to see why long-term fans of the band do not enjoy this one. But, for me, this is where I came in to Satyricon’s world, at least in terms of full-length albums. I remember this coming out, and I saw them on this tour. So I guess it holds nice memories for me from when I was a young’un.

Let’s speak frankly about the music, however. Now, Diabolical is catchier and more pronounced than the stuff that came on Volcano and Rebel Extravaganza. Stuff that came afterwards, in regards to The Age Of Nero, which felt like a carbon copy of this one, feels a little stunted growth-wise. So, if I had to pick one Satyricon “Black and Roll” album, it would be this one.

I genuinely believe that every single song on this thing is great. It is a rare perfect listen; from start to finish I can just let this one unfurl and I enjoy every second of it. It isn’t perfect by any stretch, but it IS fucking good.
