Absurd – Werwolflicht (2024)

September 10, 2024

The AI cover art probably sums up the state of this thing more than the band ever intended it to: yes, it’s not so bad, but the longer you spend with it the more you realise that it’s just a generic pile of nothing that goes absolutely nowhere. It’s not the worst thing I’ve ever heard, but it seems oddly stifled and confined, even with a fairly big modern production and soundstage that allows the songs to breathe. The better tracks come to the second half of the record, but by that point, to be honest, it’s beyond saving.

The conclusion can only be this: Werwolflicht is a pointless entry under the “Absurd” name, especially with the JFN-version doing so well recently. Also, I’m pretty sure the last JFNsurd EP even had Wolf back on vocals? Surely then, the claim to the Absurd name lies with the Mobus brothers?

If this fever dream of a GBK side project instead got released under a different name (and perhaps without the AI art) I do not doubt that it would have been recieved much better, but it wouldn’t have changed the sadly lazy record that we have before us today.
