Retro gaming is an absolute gold mine for decent tunes, and the original Streets Of Rage soundtrack is a fucking banger, and probably one of the best places to start. It’s basically everything you could ever want from music in this style; it captures a time and a place, yet is also quite futuristic and exciting. Top stuff.

The OST finally got the treatment it deserves with an official release in 2015, making Yuzo Koshiro a musician rather than just a crazy games designer who programmed his own code to write music with. There are some stunning vinyl releases thanks to the Data Discs label.
